I do believe wether you need to host your blog or not are depend on what blogging platform do you use.For example, if you use blogspot you can't! However blogspot did support ftp publishing. Back in 2008 when i blogged frequently, i tried to host my blog ( not this one ) into my own server with custom domain via ftp publishing. So that i can have some info regarding their performance. Be it their speed, stablity, or it's customer service. I moved to predict the traffic. I gotta know for whom my blog is intended. For example, if i write a blog with Bahasa Indonesia, i'm targeting most of the visitor of my blog will come from Indonesia so i need a hosting company that it's servers are based in Indonesia as many people in my country are having trouble accesing foreign website/blog. And then i gotta predict how much traffic will my blog got per month. If you just started blogging and got few visit you can choose the lowest bandwitch offered. As your blog grow over time, you can ask for another bandwitch. And if you use wordpress one thing to consider is finding the cpanel web hosting company suporting fantastico for your blogging convenience.
